BELOW ARE ANSWERS TO LIKELY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT CHARTERED:
WHAT IS CHARTERED? Chartered is simply referred to as a situation whereby someone is technically, professionally, practically and adequately trained on a particular profession e.g. accounting, economics, administration, banking, insurance etc, someone who undergoes the training is addressed as “chartered” e.g. chartered accountant, chartered banker, chartered economist etc, he is in other word addressed as qualified, registered or professional. The certificates issued to such person are called associate, membership and/or fellow while universities issue bachelor, master and doctorate degrees. To be chartered, you must attend or be a student-member of a professional institution of your choice like the Chartered Institute of Commerce, Institute of Chartered Accountants, Institute of Chartered Economists, and Nigeria Institute of Marketers etc. Being chartered qualifies you to operate throughout area of your profession while it is not applicable to degree holders.
WHAT IS ACADEMY? Academy is otherwise called education or information being formally educated (attending university, polytechnics etc) does not really qualify someone as a professional or chartered because you are informed or formally educated does not really mean you are technically, practically or professionally qualified to handle some certain contracts. Degree holders are under this category and they are some times referred to as academic. Statutory does not allow those who fall into this category to perform some certain duties in their respective professions e.g. Degree holder in accounting can not be allowed to work as external auditor etc.
HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO BE CHARTERED? Professional syllabuses are normally 6 years syllabuses this is one of the reasons professional certificates are placed above first degree and equivalent to second degree in labour market. But a brilliant and well financed student can become chartered within three years.
PEOPLE SAY SOMEONE MUST POSSESS FIRST DEGREE BEFORE RUNNING PROFESSIONAL PROGRAM? NO, professional programs start from undergraduate levels, someone who has SSCE starts from undergraduate level while HND/B.sc holder starts from graduate level for example SSCE holder starts from Foundation 1 while graduate-degree/HND holder starts from PE 3 part 1 in case of the Chartered Institute of Commerce and many others.
WHAT ARE THE STAGES? The stages are for SSCE holders F1, F2, PE 1, PE 2, PE 3 part 1, PE 3 part 2 in case of the Chartered Institute of Commerce, ATSWA1, ATSWA2, ATSWA3, PE1, PE2, PE3, in a case of Institute of Chartered Accountants etc. For graduate, in a case of the Chartered Institute of Commerce PE3 part 1, PE 3 part2, while it is PE2 and PE 3, in a case of institute of Chartered Accountants. Complexion of the stages entitles you or qualifies you as chartered certificate holder (associate).
HOW POSSIBLE IS EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY? I don’t want to talk much about this because I believe that the above information/explanations must have educated you enough to know that professionals are cake in the labour market, some say, some organizations require first degree with the professional qualification, I will therefore want you to pay full attention on the below explanations:
When ICAN started in 1965, it started with graduate program, so there was no other way through which someone could become chartered except having first degree and precedes to the institution, so this made it mandatory for some to have HND/B.sc, with this you should know that organization will surely require either B.sc or HND or equivalent with your professional qualification as there was no other way then but through degree/HND.
On 10th August 1982 in Lagos, the institute started undergraduate level called ATSWA (Accounting Technician Scheme for West Africa) formally called ATS right since then, there is option for students to either attend professional schools or academic schools, so whosoever has professional qualification has high possibility of gaining employment in a particular organization as degree holder except the organization does not budget or have enough to pay a professional.
For example, a newly established university of science and technology, Ifaki, Ekiti State needs senior accountant, accountant, audit officer and it requires that applicants/candidates must possess B.sc in accounting or PE1 of a professional institution this means with your PE 1, you can secure a good job because PE1 is equivalent with B.sc, you can find this out using google. Apart from that, many organizations want purely and professionally trained people, because every business of this generation needs professional if it must be successful but there are very scarce in the labour market.
CAN SOMEONE WITH PROFESSIONAL DIPLOMA LIKE ATS BE ADMITTED TO UNIVERSITY? Yes, if you check your brochure, you will see where there are stated, someone with professional diploma/foundation (not chartered yet is considered for into 200 level direct entries)
WHAT ABOUT GRADUATE PROGRAM? Professionals (chartered) even find it easier to run their Master program compared to degree/HND holder some universities do not require chartered to write GMAT before they can run their MBA like London Business School, also Edinburgh Business School is the Graduate School
of Business of Heriot-Watt University, Scotland gives professionals some exemptions in some courses while degree holders are not given.
WHAT ARE THE QUALITIES EMPLOYERS AND CLIENTS EXPECT FROM PROFESSIONAL? Some of the qualities employers expect from professionals are:
Professional must be able to develop theories based on experience and information gathered.
Professional must be able to reduce his employer’s risk and or uncertainty based on information gathered with aid of little resources available.
Quick and reasonable decision making- professionals are expected to be able to make decision reasonably, I remember one of the courses I did at one of my PE 3 levels called marketing management analysis and decision, it was two paper exam 9am to 12noon, 1pm to 4pm, the cause really exposed me to how to make decision with aid of analysis.
Professional must be trustworthy, employers/clients must be able to entrust his asset with professional.
WHY SHOULD EMPLOYERS PREFER CHARTERED TO DEGREE/HND? SOME OF THE REASONS ARE?
Because who can not take a professional responsibility can never pass professional exams, employers know that who graduated as a professional has what it takes while they see some degree/HND holders who can not spell their names.
Because according to statutory, there are some certain contracts that degree/HND holders do not have capacity to while professionals have.
Because it is not easy for a professionals to practice fraud as they are traceable, if a professional is found offended of misappropriations, fraud or any related offence, he shall be penalized according to ethics/disciplinary committee of the body concerned and constitution of the country which could lead to seizing of license and/or certificate of the professional in question while this may not be applicable to degree/HND holders as they don’t belong to any professional body.
Because professionals are legally authorized to act/do/accept/offer/disagree/ etc throughout area of their profession and legally degree/HND holders are not allowed to do some certain thing in their various professions.
What areas of business can a professional specialize on? Professional can special on:
Financial consultation/analysis, investment consultation/analysis, marketing consultation/analysis, economic consultation/analysis, management consultation/analysis, entrepreneurship consultation/analysis, audit consultation/analysis, stock/insurance broker and many more.
